The Herbert Protocol

Helping Keep Your Loved Ones Safe

Here at Strensall Day Care we understand that caring for a relative or friend with dementia can be challenging, especially when they become disoriented in unfamiliar surroundings. We are also aware that if your loved one ever goes missing, it can be a frightening experience. We recommend using a system called the Herbert Protocol, a practical and straightforward tool that anyone can access that is designed to help find people with dementia quickly and safely.

What is the Herbert Protocol?

The Herbert Protocol is a pre-prepared information form that assists the police in finding a missing person with dementia. It is named after George Herbert, a war veteran who experienced dementia and often wandered away from his care home. By having essential details readily available, families and caregivers can help reduce search times and improve the chances of a safe return for their loved one.

Why is the Herbert Protocol Important?

When someone with dementia goes missing, time is critical. The longer they remain lost, the greater the risk to their safety. This protocol ensures that vital information is collected in advance, allowing emergency services to act immediately instead of delaying the search to gather details.
For families, this proactive approach offers peace of mind, knowing they have taken steps to keep their loved one safe.

How Does It Work?

The Herbert Protocol form can be filled out in advance and kept in a safe place. It can be stored as a printed document or a digital file that can be emailed when needed. The form includes important details such as:

✅ Personal details – Name, date of birth, address, and any nicknames.
✅ Recent photograph – A clear, up-to-date image to help police identify them.
✅ Medical history – Health conditions, medication needs, and any mobility issues.
✅ Routines and habits – Favourite places, daily activities, and locations to.
✅ Emergency contacts – Family, friends, GP and healthcare professionals.

By completing this form before an emergency happens, you can help the police begin their search without delay.

Where Should You Keep the Form?

Once filled out, keep a copy in an easy-to-find location, such as in a kitchen drawer or with their medical records. It’s also a good idea to share it with caregivers, close neighbours, care home or anyone involved in their care and wellbeing.

If your loved one goes missing, the police can access this information immediately, rather than spending valuable time gathering details.

Step-by-Step Guide to Completing the Herbert Protocol Form – the information you’ll need

Gather Key Information
Your loved one’s full name, date of birth, and home address. Include any names they are commonly called by, like a nickname or family name.

A Recent Photo
Choose a clear, up-to-date photograph that accurately reflects their current appearance.

Medical Records and Mobility Details
Note any medical conditions, including their dementia diagnosis and any medications they take regularly. Also, mention whether they use a cane, walker, or other mobility aids.

Routines and Favourite Places
Think about where they might go if they wander. Do they have a favourite park, café, or church? Have they lived in another area in the past and might try to return there? Where did they used to work?

Provide Emergency Contacts
List family members, close friends, neighbours, caregivers, and health professionals like their GP who should be contacted in case of an emergency.

What to Do If Your Loved One Goes Missing

Step 1: Stay Calm & Search Nearby
Start by checking common areas where they might be, such as their home, garden, nearby streets, or familiar places they frequently visit.

Step 2: Call the Police
If they are not found quickly, dial 999 and inform the police. Let them know that you have a Herbert Protocol form ready.

Step 3: Share the Herbert Protocol Form
Provide the police with the completed form, either as a physical copy or by email, so they can start their search immediately.

Taking Action Today for Peace of Mind Tomorrow

The Herbert Protocol can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety of someone with dementia. By preparing in advance, you can help speed up search efforts and improve the chances of a safe return.

Taking just a few minutes to complete the form and store it securely could one day be lifesaving. Make sure caregivers and family members know where to find it so that, in an emergency, help can arrive as quickly as possible.
